Making GIFs?
11 Mar 2013 06:14 pmSorry for being Spammy McSpamster today - it's a mood swing kind of thing. *g*
So, my head is too messed up to write or make graphics, but I've been looking for a certain GIF with no luck - & so I thought maybe I could just make my own.
Unfortunately, I don't know how & Googling it brings up seventy billion tutorials which all seem to involve me needing certain software or something else (like a functioning brain, perhaps. *g*)
But, anyway - can anyone link me to a really simple step-by-step tutorial on making a GIF please?
I've got a Mac & already have Photoshop CS5. I also DLed Gimp the other day (so I could resize some GIFs made by other much cleverer folk) but I have no idea if I can use this to make my own. (Some tutorials talked about needing GAP for Gimp & I have no idea what that is/how to obtain it/how to install it on a Mac.)
*head desk*
Maybe this is all beyond my medicated cognitive processes? *g*
Anyhoo - any help would be most gratefully received. Thanks, folks.
And if you can't help, no problem! :)
*hugs*

Layout makeover
8 Mar 2013 10:09 amSo, I managed to get my header banner back (oops - actually that was my fault, not LJ's this time! *g*)
While I was at it (& as I can't seem to get my rotating banners to work anymore) I decided to give my LJ a bit of a makeover as I'd had that layout for a few years.
The style is still the same but I've gone for a Spn theme & a new colour scheme. I love it! <3
Credits: the original gifs in my sidebar are from
fiercelynormal &
raloria (I resized them to fit). The animated mood theme is from dana_duchovny, & thanks to data_nali for her list of spn mood themes that helped me track this down.
Speaking of gifs. Does anyone know where I can get one of a barechested!Sam doing pull-ups in ep 6.03 The Third Man?
You know the scene I mean... ;)

(Not sure where I got this. Sorry. I'll add credit if anyone can tell me.)
Technical grrrs plus a smile
6 Mar 2013 09:08 amSo, my LJ banner has now completely vanished. I have no idea why - I'd removed the rotate thingy & was just settled with one banner but now that's gone, too.
<--- Sam is summarising my mood quite well. (Thank you, Sammy. ♥)
I really hope this is just an LJ glitch because I love having a banner.
*sniffles*
If anyone can offer any advice, I'd be very grateful please.
On a much brighter note: SPN does the Harlem Shake! LOL
I don't really get this craze (old fogey dinosaur, blah, blah, blah *g*), but seeing Jensen shaking those gorgeous hips is hardly a hardship. *g*
Apparently, the whole thing was Jensen's idea. *g*
Once everyone piles in, Jensen is the one wearing a blue/white hockey jersey, Jared is next to him wearing a ski parka & waving a big red hand, & Gen is the one with the dogs!
Oh, & Osric Chau (Kevin) is the one in the body bag! LOL
The fabulous
fiercelynormal has giffed those smooth hips for posterity!

Mmm-mmmm...
My day feels brighter already!

Where'd they go?
27 Feb 2013 02:29 pmHuh.
My rotating banners & side bar pics have vanished on my lj. There's an 'image error' message. :(
My pics are all still on my server, but they're not showing up.
I use a little 'rotate.php' thingy to get them to rotate. I have no idea why this has worked perfectly for years & has now (in the last couple of days, I think) just stopped.
*sigh*
Maybe it's the universe's way of telling me that I should update my layout? *g*

The annual Valentine's Day art fests are running again over at
sgaartvalentine &
h5oartvalentine.
If you'd like to take part as an artist or leave a prompt for some art that you'd like to see, then do pop over & check out the details. (It's a very easy-going challenge with very few rules. *g*)
Also - can anyone help me out please?
In the past, I've done the text area thing that let's a little box show with code for copying & pasting. But I tried to do this yesterday (to allow the art fest banners to be pimped) & it didn't work - the text inside got changed. :(
I tried to edit it, but it kept changing parts of the code etc to weird stuff.
Edit:
Yay! Sorted - I needed to tick the 'stop auto-format' option in the HTML version.
Thanks to
saphirablue &
tashirasbubble for the help. :)

Scam warning
5 Jul 2011 10:59 amHuh, I think I've just avoided a scam artist.
I was cold-called by someone calling themselves 'Janet' - with a heavy accent that seemed very 'unJanetlike' - saying they were getting error messages being sent from my computer.
She had my name (& obviously my telephone number) & said she was working for some firm supporting Windows. (I actually couldn't catch most of what she said.) She said she'd take me through the errors, etc on my PC.
I definitely didn't like the sound of this, so I was polite but firm & said I'd look into it myself & hung up.
I've just done a quick search & there seems to be a scam like this that's been going around for a while now. They charge you for 'cleaning' your PC & can also install malware & get your credit card details, etc. Source #1 #2, #3.
Just thought I'd give the heads-up as this was completely new to me.

Coding question
1 Feb 2011 03:30 pmI'm not sure what you call this, but you know you see posts (often sign-up posts for challenges, etc) where there's a box embedded in the post & it has coding in it?
How do you make one of those boxes please?
I want to make some challenge banners (with links to the comm) available for the art valentine challenges but don't know how to make the box thingy (heh, I'm so technical! *g*)
'Austin' is playing & now I want to read 'Atlantis'. Is it bad I want to read my own fic? *g*
EDIT:
Sorted! In no time at all by the awesome
sexycazzy. :)

I need to make a post in the Art Valentine comms & screen any comments left to them.
I know how to set the post so that comments are screened, but if I then reply to a screened comment, does it become visible to everyone?
If so, is there a way to avoid that happening please?
Sorry - never had to do this before (except once in the Art Santa & fudged that by just PMing the commenter! *g*)

UK consumer help please?
4 Nov 2010 09:08 amI ordered a new monitor from Amazon - though it was from a company selling through them, not Amazon itself.
The monitor arrived yesterday but is dead. I can't even get the power to come on, let alone connect it to my PC.
I contacted the company who have told me that I have to phone Acer (the manufacturer) for them to deal with it.
Is this right?
I mean, if I'd bought it in person from a shop & this happened & I took it back surely they'd just replace it. It's not like it was working & then broke down - it didn't work from the moment I got it out of the box.
I'm wondering if the company is just trying to fob me off with Acer.
Any thoughts, folks please?
EDITED FOR AN UPDATE:
Taking the advice of my brilliant flist, I contacted them & basically said that I knew my rights & I expected to return the monitor for a replacement or refund. Obviously, me sprinkling a few bits of Consumer Law in made them realise that they couldn't fob me off to Acer & now I'm just waiting for the UPS van to come & pick up the faulty monitor. *g*
I'm still not out of the woods, yet, but if they refuse to refund or replace then I'll have no compunction about filing a claim with Amazon. It's obvious that this company tries to fob off unhappy customers to the manufacturer, etc - when it's their responsibility to make good. I checked on Amazon & though most of their feedback is good (when there was no problem with the item) it's very bad when there's a fault. I saw other people saying that they'd been referred to manufacturers for lengthy repairs, etc. The monitor they supplied me didn't work from the moment I took it out of the box. I see no reason that I should have to return it to the manufacturer for repair - & luckily, UK law agrees with me! :)
Thanks again to everyone who pitched in & helped me with this.
I feel so empowered! \o/

The privacy thing
2 Sep 2010 10:07 amI'm pretty certain that LJ will reverse the cross-posting to Twitter & Facebook thing, but in the meantime please don't link anything from me please.
I seriously doubt anyone here would (you guys rock!), but I thought it best to clarify.
I don't have a FB account & my Twitter is locked down, but I obviously won't be cross-posting anything either. :)
Oh, & to make this a much more satisfying post...
Boys! ♥
Edited to add:
I've made this addition to the CSS sheet & so the cross-post option is disabled. Thank you to
tarlanx for the info.
