The Island: review plus vid clips

We went to see The Island when it opened on Friday & I loved it.
My overall feeling was that this was a rollicking, action-packed popcorn movie that also tried to get you to think just a little bit about ethics & morality. But mainly it was just plain fun!
I've read a lot of poor reviews but personally I really enjoyed it. I liked the way that it opened slowly, filling in the backstory about the clones & where they thought they were. I would've imagined that a director like Michael Bay might have been tempted to jump straight into the action but he didn't & so the action was that much more effective when it did come.
The effects were well done but not overdone, giving a feeling that this world isn't that far away - just the addition of hover bikes, etc to what was completely recognisable as modern day LA, etc.
The story was a little cliched in places but there was enough freshness (plus a really engaging cast) that this didn't bother me.
It was well timed & kept me interested throughout, the pace didn't lag at all.
My main complaint was the rather abrupt ending. I would've liked a little more explanation as to how Lincoln & Jordan got the boat!
Like I say, the cast was wonderful - Ewan was completely adorable as the rather naive & innocent Lincoln Six Echo & gloriously sleazy & sexy as the lecherous Tom Lincoln. I love that he got to be Scottish for Tom! Plus all the motorbike refs too. Bless!
Sean was just drop-dead gorgeous as Merrick - omg the black suits! *guh*
He was in turns completely plausible as a dedicated scientist trying to alleviate suffering & then a calculating sociopath who wouldn't let anything stand in the way of his work. It's a shame he was the 'bad guy' but he did give the character layers & was deliciously evil at the end. *meep*
I must admit that I have my own 'gorgeous-men-centric' view of films so I don't tend to comment too much about female cast. ;-) But Scarlett J did a good job, I had no complaints, & she had a rather nice sense of comedy too.
There was a really good supporting cast too - *squee* Steve Buscemi - I love him! And Djimon Hounsou was rather impressive in an 'omghe'stotallyhot'way too! (g)
So, a big thumbs-up from me & a film that I'll definitely be getting on dvd. :-)
