It was fabulous - we just laughed so much!
I've always loved the book - read it so many times as a kid that I could recite huge chunks of it.
But I really disliked the Gene Wilder film version & so was a little trepidatious (ooh, cool word - wonder if it's real?) about this version.
I needn't have worried - Tim Burton & Johnny stayed very close to the spirit of the Roald Dahl vision. And even when there were changes - like the addition of Willy's backstory with his dad - it was really well done.
Johnny's portrayal of Willy was spot on imo. That detached, child-like innocence so out of step with the rest of the world.
I loved his little hopefully-hip phrases 'let's boogie', 'keep on truckin' & his classic 'you're weird'!

Freddie Highmore was excellent as Charlie & David Kelly was wonderful as Grandpa Jo. In fact I thought the whole cast was excellent (yay for Liz Fraser as Grandma Georgina!)
I loved the fantastic sets - the cold, austere bleakness outside the factory & the brightly coloured magic inside.
And the Oompa Loompas were amazing! All one of him. (g) It was brilliant the way they're used Deep Roy & CG'ed him over & over. And the songs were ace!
Okay - this isn't much of a review, more of a huge squee but there you go - I loved it!
Of course,pirate_hussies & I did have to corrupt this children's classic.
We decided that Willy is most definitely a virgin (yay - my fave!) & that he needed a good man (naturally!)
We pondered exactly who could do the job & came up with the glaringly obvious - Captain Jack Sparrow!
That way you get Two Johnnys & a virgin!Willy!!!

I'd like to make it clear that while I was involved in the planning & plotting stage of any resulting fic (yeah - there's actually a plot for goodness sake!) I am in no way involved in its writing. You can see Misspirate_hussies for that!
