Okay, George - you're forgiven

We went to see Episode III last night.
First, a little background... (g)
I grew up with the original trilogy (Han Solo was my first real crush) & was really disappointed with eps 1 & 2. I had just been hoping for so much & felt that George really let us down, pandering to computer game spin-offs more than story telling. The only saving grace for me was the lovely dynamic between Qui Gon & Obi Wan - that's what makes a story interesting & compelling...emotion & human interaction. (And I didn't get into TPM slash so that isn't me just being biased by a slashy pov! Though their relationship did have some lovely slashy moments, of course. I think I was just put off by the whole 'Qui Gon dying' thing (g) - I want my guys to be alive & happy together please!)
I felt that Jake Lloyd was too young to be the original Anakin & so when he suddenly grew into Hayden C in Ep II it didn't seem right - especially as Padme hadn't aged at all. So I could never really believe in the Anakin-Padme romance, especially as the screen fairly sizzled with...um...not very much at all. (g). Plus, I wasn't impressed with Hayden's acting in Ep II.
So, I was supremely sceptical about Ep III until I saw the trailer at the pictures. The trailer looked fabulous & I started to get that tingle like I did for the original trilogy.
Anyway, we went to see it last night & in the main I liked it. I didn't love it but I liked it. I just about forgive George Lucas for inflicting pod racing & Jar Jar on us ad nauseum. (g)
I thought that the relationship between Obi Wan & Anakin was much better realised this time around & Ewan McG was just a joy to behold. The story was good, dove-tailing nicely with 'A New Hope', though it did seem a bit forced in a couple of places.
I loved, loved, loved seeing Chewie! And other Wookies too - that was brilliant! And I melted into a puddle when Chewie carried Yoda on his shoulders - aw, bless!
Nice to see Threepio & Artoo having more to do, & Artoo actually kicked some arse too! Gooooo, Artoo! LOL
I still didn't really buy the Anakin-Padme storyline. Plus Anakin's descent into mistrust of the Jedi & his seduction to the dark side seemed rather rushed & forced to me. More time needed to be spent showing him struggling with his feelings of wanting to protect Padme versus his allegiance to the Jedi. I mean he was raised as & by the Jedi since he was a little kid but it seemed a few nightmares & some glib words from Palpatine & he's on his knees swearing to serve the Emperor.
It was also interesting to note that the dark side of the Force must have a ban on the use of shampoo as Anakin's hair gradually grew more greasy as he turned to the dark side. ;-) Or maybe this was an acting technique employed by HC because he didn't seem to be doing much else. I'm sorry - his performance was better than in Ep II but I still found him to be rather one note. :-( I haven't seen him in anything else so I don't know if it's him or if it's more to do with George Lucas not being an 'actor's director' & so not getting a better performance from him.
The final showdown in the lava pits was excellent & Obi Wan's anguished cry of 'You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you' made a lump come to my throat.
Seeing Anakin's transformation into Vader was really cool & I got all goose-bumpy when we first heard his raspy breathing.
But strangely, the one thing in the whole film that really touched me was Yoda telling Obi Wan that he would be able to communicate with Qui Gon. The look on Obi Wan's face has completely made me believe in the Qui Gon/Obi Wan slash dynamic - & after all this time I actually want to read some Q/O! ♥
So, those are my first thoughts on seeing the film. It was a good yarn & it was nice to see the story wrapped up after all this time. :-)
Now, who can rec some good Qui/Obi fic? Preferably with a happy ending & no pesky dying please! ;-)
*guh*
Now I need a Qui Gon/Obi Wan icon too! ♥
