The Calcium Kid
3 May 2004 07:57 amSo we went to see The Calcium Kid last night.
First of all can I just get this off my chest please?
Orlando Bloom is just the cutest, most adorable boy in the world!

Okay, so obviously this isn't going to be an objective review but here are my thoughts about this film. (g)
(Be warned: spoilers under the cut.)

The Calcium Kid is a low budget little Brit flick. It has a first time director & unfortunately this shows. The film doesn't quite seem to make up its mind what it is; bouncing from slapstick silliness to a little more of a comedy-drama. Due to this the pace does lag a bit in the middle of the film but then picks up very nicely for the final 20 minutes. The plot is improbable but that's part of the whole 'joke'; the film is a comedy & so it works well within that framework.
The supporting characters are competent although unfortunately a couple have been written more as caricatures which is rather distracting & occasionally a little irritating.
However, Orlando's performance is lovely. He plays shy, naiveté beautifully and despite the limits of the script & direction we also see the character of Jimmy grow during the film. He has a nice turn for comedy & I laughed out loud when he was quoting some of his dad's words of wisdom, he gave it just enough with the big-eyed sincerity to be truly funny. There was also an adorable little 'fumbling under the covers' scene with Jimmy doing his 'morning press ups' (g) which was very cute & his face was a picture! Aw bless!
Orlando has much more to get his teeth into with the role in the last third of the film & he does so brilliantly. I particularly liked the meeting with his Dad in jail - some lovely work from him there.
On a purely shallow level we do get to see Orli in his boxing kit, hence bare-chested - for much of the film & he is truly stunning! I especially loved him in his white satin fight gear!

So overall - not the best film I've ever seen but certainly not the worst by a long chalk.
I enjoyed 'The Calcium Kid' & had a smashing evening watching the completely gorgeous & edible Mr Bloom on the big screen.

As for Paul Gross - yep I have the CD (still listening to it right now.) I love

I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Hopefully the bad bits won't turn Orli off of comedy forever. That'd be a crying shame.

And yes, I really hope Orli does comedy again because he does it so nicely imo.
But then, he does everything so nicely!
