First of a two-part story that sees Colonel Sharpe return for his most dangerous mission to date. A year after Wellington crushes Napoleon, dispatches from India tell of a Maharaja who is threatening British interests and is in cahoots with an officer-turned-rogue. Upon his arrival, Sharpe realises the situation is far worse than Wellington made out. A British General's daughter has been kidnapped and the Maharaja has recruited solidiers from Napoleon's former army.

In the conclusion to the two-part story, Sharpe and Harper face a tough test of loyalty when they join the French in training the Maharaja's army. They take the opportunity to scout the fort and determine where its weakness lies. Sharpe realises the East Indian Company troops are being lured into a trap where they will be shot to pieces, but how can he warn them without blowing his cover? As an attack on the fort begins, Sharpe must rescue Celia and save the British soldiers from a bloody end.
