Help needed please: US college football teams?

Okay, I'm British & know next to nothing about American Football.
I have a throwaway line in a story that needs the name of a real underdog college football team. One that's famous for coming back against the odds.
I watched the bit in 'Hide & Seek' where John & the team are watching a game, & I've managed to work out (thank you, Google) that it's Boston College Eagles beating Miami Hurricanes in 1984.
So, are the Eagles generally regarded as underdogs or was it purely in that season/game?

I don't need lots of detail - just the name of a team that if anyone is reading it & knows about US college football they won't think. 'Huh? That doesn't make sense as Team X is actually really good. This is obviously written by a Brit who knows next to nothing about football.' *g*

So, if I did use Boston Eagles - would that work or was that a one-off & actually they're pretty good?

So, any suggestions please, folks for a US college football team that are generally regarded as underdogs but also survivors?
