Old Ficlet: Venetian Interlude

This is another old fic.
It was the first Sean/Orlando fic that I ever wrote & it ended a two year writing drought for me. So although it's just a fluffy little piece it means a lot to me.

Venetian Interlude

“Sean! The gondolas!”

Orlando’s excited voice pulled Sean from his perusal of the fake Venetian shops and painted sky as they strolled along the side of the Grand Canal - Las Vegas style.

“See, I told you they had them. I saw it on that programme I was watching on the telly about how they built this place. And look, people are taking rides in them. Doesn’t it look fantastic? Can we go on one?”

Sean gazed at the ornately crafted gondolas as they glided through the too-blue water, steered by cheerful gondoliers in striped shirts and straw boaters.

“Oh yeah, I can just see us riding along while the bloke’s singing ‘Just one Cornetto’!” Sean laughed, turning to grin at Orlando.

However, the grin faded as he saw a flicker of disappointment quickly masked behind an overly bright Orli-smile.

“Yeah, you’re right - s’just for tourists anyway isn’t it.”

Sean sighed inwardly; he hated seeing that façade. It was wrong somehow…Orli was too open and genuine to have to retreat behind walls…especially walls of Sean’s making.

Then Sean nodded, the skin at the corners of his eyes crinkling up a little as his face lit up with a broad smile.

“Yeah, tourists,” he said, throwing an arm around Orlando’s shoulders and guiding him towards the loading jetty. “And guess what, sweetheart? We are tourists, so let’s go.”

~~~
As the hotel door clicked snugly shut behind them, Sean found himself with an armful of warm, wriggling Orlando and the recipient of a soft, sweet kiss.
Sucking gently on the tongue filling his mouth, Sean deepened the kiss before finally pulling away and raising a quizzical eyebrow.
“What was that for?”
“Just wanted to say thank you,” Orlando replied with a smile. “I know you didn’t really want to do the gondola ride but you did it anyway.”
Guiding them slowly into the suite, Orlando still locked in his embrace, Sean shook his head.
“No, I’m glad we did. This place is mad and we might as well get into the spirit.” Sobering a little he continued. “I forget sometimes just how much you enjoy life…and I want to share that with you, I really do. I know I’m not always very good at this relationship stuff and that I miss the signals. I don’t say things when I should or just say the wrong thing. But I want to get this right. I want to make you happy. No,” Sean raised a gentle finger to Orlando’s lips as he began to interrupt. “I mean it. I want to get it right for you, baby. I just wish I didn’t tie myself up in knots. Stupid, isn’t it? Give me a script and I’m fine but …”
“Oh, love,” Orlando sighed, tightening his hold around Sean’s shoulders. “You do make me happy. Just being with you means the world to me, don’t you see? And the fact that you’ll go on a naff old gondola trip around a fake canal in an overblown hotel in the middle of the bloody desert tells me just how much you care!” He finished with a laugh.
Smiling ruefully, Sean shook his head. “Yeah but what about when the gondolier started to sing? I thought you were going to piss yourself laughing!”
“What?! What about you, mate? Your face was a picture, I was expecting you to jump overboard and swim for it.”
The laughter continued to roll between them as they flopped down to the bed, still entwined.
Quietening, Sean looked seriously into clear, brown eyes. “So, we alright then?”
Orlando smiled softly, his eyes going sleepy. “Yeah, we’re alright…you Northern Bastard.”
Leaning in, Sean whispered his chuckled reply against pliant lips. “Yeah…love you too, baby.”
