New Ficlet: Remember

So here it is - my first ever Vig/Sean snippet - a little VigBeanlet, if you will. (g)

Pairing: SB/VM

Rating: PG

Summary: The significance of insignificant things.

Disclaimer: The following story is a work of fiction. The author is not making any claims as to the real life sexualities or preferences of the people portrayed here. This is purely for entertainment, not profit.

Notes:
1. I got this idea when I read that Sean Bean had been burgled. This is a horrible thing to happen & I'm very glad that he was okay. It just got me thinking.
2. This is slightly experimental for me - both in style (blame my 'artistic' Viggo!muse) & in pairing.
3. Thanks to my long-suffering husband, Mr Bluespirit, for the read-through. *mwah*

Kind feedback is welcome, thank you.

A loud ringing jarred Viggo from his solitary preoccupation with a single stroke of vermilion and he reached blindly for the telephone.

"Vig?"

It was Sean and even from one word he could tell that there was something wrong.

"Hey, babe. What's the matter?" His inner voice supplied what he didn't need to say out loud - I'm here, what can I do, what do you need?

"There's been a burglary…someone broke into the house."

"Shit! Are you okay?" Viggo visualised the word 'yes' in broad cursive strokes, willing Sean to say it.

"Yeah, m'fine - wasn't even here when the cunts broke in."

Viggo nodded, even though he couldn't be seen, and pressed his ear more closely to the paint-smeared receiver, trying to make up for the distance between them. "Then that's all that matters."

"You're not even going to ask what they took, are you?" Sean sounded as if he was amused despite his better judgement. It was a feeling that Viggo often seemed to engender in him and he could imagine Sean shaking his head in disgust but still smiling faintly.

"As long as they didn't take you, then it's okay." Viggo heard Sean stifling a snort but there was an underlying melancholy to his next words.

"They took it, Vig. They took the pebble."

Oh, so that was it. "It's just a pebble, babe…." But Viggo knew that it was more than that.

Sadness bled through the uncompromising plastic next to Viggo's ear. "You picked it up on the beach that night and gave it to me. Remember what I said to you, Vig?"

He knew that Sean already knew the answer but humoured him anyway. "You asked me why I'd given you that particular pebble, what made it special - different from the thousands of others on the beach."

"And what did you say to that?" Sean's voice was softer now.

"I told you that it was special because it was the pebble that you were holding when I kissed you for the first time…."

"And then you kissed me," Sean sighed.

"And then I kissed you."

"I've kept it for all these years, Vig, always carry it with me. But I was in a rush and picked up my other jacket, didn't check that everything was in the pocket. So it was sitting there with my wallet and keys when they broke in…they took the pebble, Vig." Sean repeated quietly. He could be so sentimental at times - a surprise to those not close enough to see past the smoke and mirrors.

"Yeah, they did," Viggo murmured. "So, have you forgotten our first kiss?"

"What? No, of course I haven't!" He sounded almost scandalised.

"So it doesn't matter then, does it?"

There was a pause and Viggo heard Sean catch a breath and then laugh, a little choking splutter that made him smile.

"Bastard! When did you get so clever?"

"That night on the beach - when I kissed you," Viggo grinned into the telephone, Sean's sigh sounding happier now.

"I'm glad that you did."

"Me too." Viggo nodded, sure that Sean would know.

"I'll see you Thursday then?"

"Yeah, my plane gets in at noon. Terminal three."

"I'll be there, Vig."

"I know you will, babe. I know."

Awwwwwwww. All right, that was just... lovely. I love the story of how Viggo gave Sean the pebble, and how Sean's always kept it. This is a perfect example of what a symbol is and how powerful it can be, but also a reminder that symbols are only symbols, and that losing one isn't a catastrophe so long as we still have the thing it stood for. Wonderful job. :D

I think your artistic Viggo muse did you proud.

It seems exactly like the kind of thing he'd say. The story was absolutely lovely.

Poor Sean though,I see he's had his car taken too now...Police think someone is stalking him and targeting him. Nasty bastard(s) I hope thay catch them soon.

Viggo needs to arrive and give some full on comfort to the Bean

"As long as they didn't take you, then it's okay."

Awww! Poor Sean! And what a lovely idea - it's always the sentimental things that can't be replaced that are the most treasured of possessions.

Still, thank goodness he still has Viggo to look after him! xx

Sorry, wandering back here to read before zipping on to the companion drabble. This is very lovely. I am especially enamoured of Viggo's abstract and artistic thought patterns, like--
Viggo visualised the word 'yes' in broad cursive strokes, willing Sean to say it.
--A wonderful image that works quite beautifully in tandem with Viggo's very clever and very touching first kiss on the beach.

This was really nice. I wish I'd seen it the first time around.

I found my way here via [livejournal.com profile] foxrafer's link and I'm glad that I took her advice. What a lovely fic! Well done. :D

they took the pebble, Vig." Sean repeated quietly
that he says it again is perfect; you can see him trying to deal with his grief about that loss.

this is a lovely idea. well done!

I just love that Viggo is the one to comfort Sean. That he is the more 'sane' of the two in this scene. Really nice.

(Here via the MOME awards, btw!)
