bluespirit: (Lord Peter Wimsey)
I'm currently going through some binge reading!
*winks at [livejournal.com profile] caffyolay*
I've mainlined all of the Jack Haldean novels by Dolores Gordon-Smith (save the latest which, inexplicably, isn't available on Kindle yet) & am now two books into the Angela Marchmont mysteries by Clara Benson.  I'm having such a gay time (in the sense of fun as opposed to boy-kissing, unusually for me, as said novels are all set in the 1920s! *g*)
I've also recently read the latest Lord Peter Wimsey mystery - The Late Scholar -  & I'd meant to recommend it straight away but somehow time had got away from me.  Jill Paton-Walsh has taken up the reins from Dorothy L Sayers & is doing a very credible job.  I wasn't quite so keen on the last book (The Attenbury Emeralds) but mainly because of the narrative style that she chose to use, but I loved The Late Scholar.  I think especially because she's chosen to set it in Oxford & as Gaudy Night is probably my favourite LPW story, then she had me at Magdalen! *g*

In other news, Mr B & I are running the Chester Half Marathon on Sunday in aid of the Lab rescue who brought us our gorgeous Bud & Cancer Research (in memory of my much loved & missed dad.) Typically, my right ITB has decided over the last couple of weeks to become sore.  I've rested it & am doing physio to strengthen my core muscles to help it.  Hopefully, it should be okay on Sunday.  It does now mean that instead of aiming for the time that I'd been hoping to run, I'm just going to have a leisurely run & enjoy all the sights in & around Chester.

Happy Tuesday, all! (Yay - Tuesday means new Supernatural to watch tomorrow!)
bluespirit: (Buddy - hullooo?)
Bud is very 'helpful' when I'm cutting out fabric on the floor.
He likes to make sure that none magically flies away. *g*

Honestly, I turned my back for a minute & this is what I found!
Oh, Buddy! ♥

I've been making little name tags for my sewing projects (with a fabric pen) but I found some places online that will make proper tags with whatever you want on them.
So, here's the 'Chez Buddy' label. *g*

[livejournal.com profile] lantean_drift & [livejournal.com profile] saffron_1 - I can swap yours out, if you like. :)

We're very busy this upcoming weekend - on Sat we're going up to the Cake & Bake Show in Manchester. Yay!  And on Sun we're going down to London & Mr B will go off & do his own thing while I meet the lovely [livejournal.com profile] hilde for lunch. Woot!
Because of the busy weekend, I needed to get my long training run done early & so I did 9 miles today.  The run was good but I may have gone a little faster than I should have. I'm feeling a tad stiff now - time for a nice bath, I think. *g*

Hope everyone is having a lovely Thursday!
*hugs*

Ouch!

bluespirit: (5-O Steve running)
I was running around the wood this morning & tripped over a root. I went full out on my stomach, banging my knees & grazing my palms on the way down. What a dope! Fortunately, Bud was there to come over & give me a snuggle. ♥
I'm okay - just a bit sore & no doubt bruised as time goes on - & I finished my run (paying extra attention to the ground!)

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] laura_iskra asked about my running...  After not being able to do virtually any last year (with my depression) I'm really happy to be back into it at last. I began just after Christmas with short runs & am keeping up with all of my physio exercises.  Mr B & I are running in the Chester Half Marathon in May, & I'm working on a 12 week training plan to get my mileage back up to the 13.1 miles that I'll need.  It's actually going really well (stupid falls apart *g*) & I'm pleased with my progress.  My longest 'long run' so far has been 8 miles & I'm gradually increasing that week on week.  I'm hoping to run another half marathon in about June/July time & then maybe look to an autumn full marathon.  I'll see how my knee is, but so far, it's doing brilliantly. *fc*

We've also joined parkrun.  parkrun 'organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and we encourage people of every ability to take part; from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; we welcome you all.' (Taken from parkrun website.)  parkrun is a great way to run (or walk/run) & get involved with other runners.  I can really rec parkrun - it's friendly, no pressure running & everyone is welcome.  There are parkruns all around the world, so if you fancy joining in, do check out their website. :)

In other news: I DLed so many awesome shows this morning - we're going to have lots to watch over the next few days: Supernatural, Person of Interest, Castle, How I Met Your Mother & Rizzoli & Isles.  Yay! I love great TV. :)

Happy Wednesday, all!  Hope everyone is having a great day!

I can't believe all the hugs we're getting this season! ♥

Dean wuvs hugz

And a new ep is airing tonight!
*dances*
Can't wait to watch it tomorrow.
*dances some more*

+ We've entered the ballot for next year's London Marathon. There were 130,000 ballot slots & it closed in 11 hours! Wow.
Now we have to wait until Oct to see if we're lucky enough to get places. *fc*

+ We saw Ironman 3 last night! Woot!
It was amazing!

+ Bud & I passed by a house today that had a TARDIS nestbox.  How cool is that?  I couldn't see if anyone had started a nest there yet.  Oh, & we passed a field with a Shetland pony & a tiny foal in it!  Too cute.  (And of course I didn't have the camera with me today.)

+ I've been trying out some new recipes & made Malteaser Cupcakes (malted cupcakes with chocolate buttercream icing & Malteaser decorations. *g*) They seemed to be especially popular! :)

Boston

bluespirit: (Running ~ VLM 2010)
I'm so shocked by the events in Boston - what a horrendous & senseless act.
My heart goes out to everyone there.

I've been running for about 10 years now, & the sense of acceptance & friendship within the the running community is wonderful. I've often struck up conversations with complete strangers while taking part in races, & the couple of marathons that I've run were completely amazing & uplifting experiences. So many people run to raise money for good causes and/or in memory/celebration of loved ones.

I don't know what motivated this attack, but I know it won't stop runners from continuing to show their support & motivation for a wonderfully fulfilling sport. In fact, it's London on Sunday & I'm sure it'll be even more special than it usually is. ♥
bluespirit: (Supernatural ~ Dean awesome)
I went out early this morning for a tempo run.  It was just getting light as I was heading home & as I was running along, the streetlights started to go out.  I'd just be running up to one & it would go out - & then the next & the next.
*insert spooky music*
I know it was only the light sensor turning them off, but it was just like you see in a horror story! LOL

And then when I got home I had the most lovely surprise!  There was a parcel waiting for me from Cadbury's!
Woot! \0/
The lovely & thoughtful (& totally awesome!) [livejournal.com profile] hilde had sent me a scrumptious selection of yummy Cadbury's choccies for my birthday tomorrow! ♥
I absolutely adore milk chocolate & Cadbury's is just the best imo.
Thank you again, [livejournal.com profile] hilde!

Hee! I'm already in the birthday mood & it's still 24 hours away. *g*
Oh, this year I've decided to adopt a bit of a Hobbit tradition - so, look out for a little gift from me to all you lovely folk tomorrow.

On Sunday, we ran the Oxford Half Marathon.
Mr B had already done the Chester Marathon the week before, so he just ran along with me & acted as a pacer as I wanted to try & do sub 2:15.  (My half marathon PB is 2:05:55, but that was before my knee op & then abdom surgery last year.)
I'm absolutely thrilled to report that I did it!  2:14:44! \o/ (No doubt in part due to Mr B's excellent motivation & Yoda impressions along the way - “Do or do not... there is no try.”!!! LOL)

It was a very nice course - & absolutely lovely in places, like running around Christ Church Meadow & along the river.  The race was started by running legend, Sir Roger Bannister & the course actually took us past the Iffley Road Track where he broke the 4-minute mile in 1954.  Brilliant!

There were various bands & musical acts around the course & some good crowd support, too.  That, along with perfect running conditions, made for a great race.

We ran to support the Labrador Rescue where we got Buddy from & so far we're over a third of the way to our target of enough money to help find one dog a forever home.  ♥

So, sadly John & Rodney didn't make it through to the next round of the Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney at AfterElton.

They (& David Hewlett!) did get a very nice mention though:

Destiel dominated in the early voting rounds and seemed like they would cruise to the finals, but in Round Three, underdog McShep from Stargate Atlantis made it a real horse race thanks in part to actor David Hewlett lobbying on Twitter! Well done, sir!

It's sad they didn't make it through, but I think we put up a really good showing. Yay for the McShep love!

And now for something completely different...
Boobydoo is having a 'free delivery' weekend. \o/
I've already ordered another one of Shock Absorber's 'Run' bras (in black & silver this time).  It's the best designed sports bra I've ever had & is perfect for running.  Believe me - nothin's movin' when you've got one of these on! *g*

Happy Friday, folks!

Mr B & I ran the Cardiff Half Marathon yesterday in aid of Cancer Research.

It was my first race back since my knee surgery last year & my abdominal surgery in May, & I was pretty pleased with how it went.
Mr B ran with me for support, & my plan was to just enjoy it & not to worry about aiming for a time. So, we did just that & had a lot of fun. :)

The course was lovely. It started & finished by the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay (the 'home' of the Torchwood Hub! There was even a TARDIS in the runner's village!\o/) & looped around the city & out to cross the Cardiff Barrage.
It was unseasonably warm & sunny, but not too warm - really nice running weather, especially with the breeze as we ran along by the sea.
So, a really great experience & a very nice weekend away. \o/

Here's my glamorous assistant modelling* my medal. *g*

*This was about the only shot I managed to get that wasn't blurred or had Bud rolling around or just trying to chew the ribbon. LOL

+ Thank you [livejournal.com profile] winter_elf for my shiny tinfoil hat! LOL

+ There's a fabulous new fic from [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison that is sweet & funny & just totally great! (And I am in no way biased because of the mention of a certain person who is very close to my heart. *g*)

Dog Day Afternoon by [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison (McShep)

+ I went for a really good run last night. My best yet since the knee surgery. I'm still keeping the distance low (this was only 3.6 miles) but I pushed the pace & was really pleased with how it felt. I, um, may have signed up for the Cardiff Half Marathon in the autumn. *g* Even with me having to have my other (non-running related) surgery in a few weeks, I should hopefully have plenty of time to build up the mileage again & be ready for the race. I've really missed doing long distances. A nice 15 miles or so by the water on a Sunday morning is such a joy, & I can't wait to get back to it. :)

+ An extended trailer for next week's 5-O has been released! \o/

+ Mr B & I had a fabulous weekend away seeing the amazingly pink & sparkly Miss Kylie Minogue in her 'Aphrodite' tour.
It was absolutely phenomenal (even better than the 'X' tour imo.) It was such a joyous spectacle &, despite having seats way up in the gods & wondering if we needed to be staked down for fear of falling, we got up & danced the night away.
An awesome, awesome evening! \o/

+ Just a quick heads-up if anyone wants to subscribe to my stuff over at AO3.

I'm faviconbluespirit. (You'll need to log in to see the subscribe button.)

I'm adding my current new stuff as I post & am sloooowly adding my earlier stuff, too. So far it's just SGA & H5O. I'm not sure if I'll archive my Lotrips & even earlier fandoms - though possibly (just for completeness. *g*)

I love the download feature at AO3 - it's so easy to snag fic as PDFs & read them on my iPad without all the hassle of copy/paste/reformat-ing. :)

+ So, the SGA-SGU crossover ep with Rodney & Woolsey? Should I watch/skim? Is there any character bashing or canon developments that are going to make me wear a sad face?

+ I'm very excited - I've won two [livejournal.com profile] help_japan auctions: a story from my angel, [livejournal.com profile] lantean_drift & a song vid from the talented [livejournal.com profile] ciaimpala!
\o/

+ Speaking of excited... ;) Oh my - the latest shots of Alex & the additions he's had made to his tats! Fnnngh!

The way it's curling around his side like that just makes me lose coherent thought...

another view )

Also. Why don't I see guys like that when I'm out running? ;)

+ Speaking of which... I think (& hope & pray) that I've finally managed to get my knee back up to running fitness after my surgery last year. I've tried to run several times over the months, but I've always had a limp & so have stopped (to avoid furthur injury.) But I ran for 10 mins (yeah - not exactly a marathon *g*) yesterday & was limp free! \o/
I'm going to try one of my favourite routes later & see how I get on. Hopefully, I can get back to race fitness & maybe think about signing up for an autumn half. *fc*

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!
