bluespirit: (Buddy - hullooo?)
Last week, Bud & I represented Labrador Rescue South East & Central at Crufts!
We helped out on the LRSEC stand - raising awareness of the charity & getting donations.
Bud was an absolute star & people loved him! There were several offers to take him home - I had to explain that he was my dog & if they wanted to adopt him, they'd have to adopt me, too! *g*
It was a really lovely day, & I was so proud of my silly boy .
We had six happy-ending rescue dogs on the stand (including Bud) & there were people coming around all day long. It was so busy that apart from giving Bud a couple of comfort breaks, we worked the stand all day. So, I didn't get to do any shopping at any of the great doggie-related stalls or to see any of the events going on.  Never mind - I had so much fun talking about Bud all day!
It was rather tiring though, & when we got home, we both flaked out! *g*

I never thought that I'd be able to say that Buddy had been to Crufts! *g*

Ambassador Buddy!
bluespirit: (Lord Peter Wimsey)
I'm currently going through some binge reading!
*winks at [livejournal.com profile] caffyolay*
I've mainlined all of the Jack Haldean novels by Dolores Gordon-Smith (save the latest which, inexplicably, isn't available on Kindle yet) & am now two books into the Angela Marchmont mysteries by Clara Benson.  I'm having such a gay time (in the sense of fun as opposed to boy-kissing, unusually for me, as said novels are all set in the 1920s! *g*)
I've also recently read the latest Lord Peter Wimsey mystery - The Late Scholar -  & I'd meant to recommend it straight away but somehow time had got away from me.  Jill Paton-Walsh has taken up the reins from Dorothy L Sayers & is doing a very credible job.  I wasn't quite so keen on the last book (The Attenbury Emeralds) but mainly because of the narrative style that she chose to use, but I loved The Late Scholar.  I think especially because she's chosen to set it in Oxford & as Gaudy Night is probably my favourite LPW story, then she had me at Magdalen! *g*

In other news, Mr B & I are running the Chester Half Marathon on Sunday in aid of the Lab rescue who brought us our gorgeous Bud & Cancer Research (in memory of my much loved & missed dad.) Typically, my right ITB has decided over the last couple of weeks to become sore.  I've rested it & am doing physio to strengthen my core muscles to help it.  Hopefully, it should be okay on Sunday.  It does now mean that instead of aiming for the time that I'd been hoping to run, I'm just going to have a leisurely run & enjoy all the sights in & around Chester.

Happy Tuesday, all! (Yay - Tuesday means new Supernatural to watch tomorrow!)
bluespirit: (Buddy Xmas)
Yesterday, Bud hosted a tea party to help raise funds for the Labrador Rescue South East & Central (who brought him to us), & we managed to raise £60! \o/
His Aunties [livejournal.com profile] lantean_drift, [livejournal.com profile] saffron_1 & [livejournal.com profile] battyoldflapper came, too & there was much laughing, chatting, tea drinking, cake eating & Bud worshipping! *g*

Here's the Budster 'working hard' to entertain his guests... LOL
IMG_8183

He was a bit partied out at that point as he had had to leap about & give everyone big snuggles as they arrived. *g*  (Not to mention all of the 'baking supervision' that he'd been doing for the past couple of days. *g*)

More pics of cakes & Bud!

Happy Nearly New Year's, everyone! :)
*hugs*
bluespirit: (Buddy silly)
We hosted a little 'Paws for Tea' party at Chez Buddy last Sunday in aid of The Blue Cross animal charity.
Eighteen assorted family & friends (including the fabulous
[livejournal.com profile] lantean_drift, [livejournal.com profile] battyoldflapper & [livejournal.com profile] saffron_1) joined in the fun, & there was much chatting, laughing, tea drinking & cake scoffing.  And Bud snuggling, of course! *g*
We also had a 'Lucky Dip' which helped raise a few more pounds.  Thanks to the generosity of all present, we raised £125.60 for The Blue Cross! Woo-hoo! That's enough to vaccinate 25 kittens or microchip 6 litters of puppies or provide veterinary care for a dog for the length of its stay with the Blue Cross.
I'm so grateful to everyone who came along. :)

It also gave me the perfect excuse to 'get my bake on' *g* & here are some pics from the day (mainly of cakes & a certain handsome someone!)

pics this way... )

I really enjoyed putting this on & would love to do it again.
I also have to make special mention of Mr [livejournal.com profile] bluespirit_star who valiantly spent the afternoon making cups of tea for a house full of ladies! :)
bluespirit: (SGA John dress blues)
I'm hosting a tea party, 'Paws for Tea', in a few weeks in aid of The Blue Cross animal charity.
I've got some cookie cutters (including one that's dog shaped - naturally! *g*) but the only problem is - I don't have a recipe to use to make cookies that I can cut out! LOL
Does anyone have a rec please? :)

And in super exciting news - the fabulously talented & just all around fabulous [personal profile] sgamadison  has released her latest novel!

The Boys of Summer

(Just click on the link for all the info.)

I've just bought my copy & am so looking forward to settling down for a nice, long read!

On Sunday, we ran the Oxford Half Marathon.
Mr B had already done the Chester Marathon the week before, so he just ran along with me & acted as a pacer as I wanted to try & do sub 2:15.  (My half marathon PB is 2:05:55, but that was before my knee op & then abdom surgery last year.)
I'm absolutely thrilled to report that I did it!  2:14:44! \o/ (No doubt in part due to Mr B's excellent motivation & Yoda impressions along the way - “Do or do not... there is no try.”!!! LOL)

It was a very nice course - & absolutely lovely in places, like running around Christ Church Meadow & along the river.  The race was started by running legend, Sir Roger Bannister & the course actually took us past the Iffley Road Track where he broke the 4-minute mile in 1954.  Brilliant!

There were various bands & musical acts around the course & some good crowd support, too.  That, along with perfect running conditions, made for a great race.

We ran to support the Labrador Rescue where we got Buddy from & so far we're over a third of the way to our target of enough money to help find one dog a forever home.  ♥

I know times are tough & completely understand, but our fundraising page is here if anyone does have a Pound to spare. Thank you. ♥

Mr B & I ran the Cardiff Half Marathon yesterday in aid of Cancer Research.

It was my first race back since my knee surgery last year & my abdominal surgery in May, & I was pretty pleased with how it went.
Mr B ran with me for support, & my plan was to just enjoy it & not to worry about aiming for a time. So, we did just that & had a lot of fun. :)

The course was lovely. It started & finished by the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay (the 'home' of the Torchwood Hub! There was even a TARDIS in the runner's village!\o/) & looped around the city & out to cross the Cardiff Barrage.
It was unseasonably warm & sunny, but not too warm - really nice running weather, especially with the breeze as we ran along by the sea.
So, a really great experience & a very nice weekend away. \o/

Here's my glamorous assistant modelling* my medal. *g*

*This was about the only shot I managed to get that wasn't blurred or had Bud rolling around or just trying to chew the ribbon. LOL

As I squeed about at the time, [livejournal.com profile] xanthelj commissioned the most beautiful piece of art for my Christmas present - a gorgeous sketch of my baby boy! ♥
It's been hanging in our living room & gathering so many lovely comments since then, but now the wonderful artist, [livejournal.com profile] silvertales_art, has posted a pic of it. :)

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] cjoelle & [livejournal.com profile] vida_boheme for the very kind & worthy 'Help Japan' v-gifts. I appreciate the kind thoughts so much.
*hugs*

And a little signal boost for the [livejournal.com profile] help_japan fan auction.
I'm afraid that I'm not offering anything (I had a very bad auction experience & just can't put myself through the worry of that again) but I've already got my bids in. :)

+ Wow, I got up this morning to find so many lovely comments to my crazy-ass StepSteve fic! Including several where people commented that their own fathers, brothers, etc had done something similar!
*boggles*
See, that really wouldn't happen here. LOL
I remember the first time I was in a WalMart & wandered past the gun aisle. The gun aisle! You just don't get that in Sainsbury's. *g*

+ Hmmm, I find myself in need of more Danny icons. Must search.

+ Not to tease (yeah, right *g*) but I've beta'ed the most fabulous fic for [livejournal.com profile] lantean_drift. She just totally rocks the Steve & Danny characterisation! \o/

+ Signal boost for the Australian Flood fan appeal. I'm afraid I'm not offering any fic (I had a bad auction experience & just can't risk putting myself through that again) so I'll just be donating.

+ I've converted my 'Oyster Farmer' dvd to .mp4 for the iPad. Now I can watch it wherever I am! \o/ I'm seriously in love with this film & have watched it four times now (since I got it last week. *g*) I'm also getting a story idea for Alex's character, Jack. Just need to find the right Scott character to go with him. I need to watch 'Mercy' because, from the blurb, I'm thinking he might just be the one. The dvd arrived the other day, so I'll try to catch it soon. Oh, the hardship. *g*

And to finish...

Looks like Steve's been busy with the glitter pens again! *g*

The Labrador Rescue - LRSEC - where we got our beautiful Bud have recently taken into their care a gorgeous two-year old, black Lab boy called Guinness.
He was abandoned & taken in by Battersea Dogs Home. Unfortunately, he has severe hip dysplasia & was going to be put to sleep. However, the Lab Rescue have fostered him & he's going to have his hips replaced. This costs over £5,000 & to try to help raise funds they've entered his story in a contest to try to win £1,000 towards the cost.
Please go here & vote for Guinness - there's no registration just a simple click.
Thank you!

*big hugs from Buddy for helping*

EDIT:
Sorry - looks like I was too slow in getting this up & the voting is closed. :(
Hopefully Guinness's story can be entered again & I'll update if that's the case.

Yesterday, Mr B & I ran the Virgin London Marathon!
\o/

cut for excited rambling )

I tried to get Bud to model my medal but I'm afraid he hasn't quite got the hang of it like Rascal did. He mainly tries to eat it or roll around on the floor so I can't take a picture. *g*
These were the best efforts... *g*

Okay then - 2 days to go!
\o/

We're off to London very early tomorrow morning to get to the Expo to register, etc. Then we plan to take things easy & enjoy the day before a little carbo-loading (mmmm, pasta!) & (hopefully!) a good night's sleep.

We're at the blue start on Sunday & our race (for the masses) starts at 9.45am. It'll probably take about 10 mins to actually get to the start line & then away we go!
Initially - before my injury - Mr B & I had intended to run the race together. However, I'm running so much more slowly at the moment, so he's going to run the first few miles with me & then go & run his own race. I don't want to slow him down, & so this is the best plan (there are 36,000 runners plus thousands in the crowd so I don't think I'll be lonely. *g*) Also I'm so excited - & grateful - that [livejournal.com profile] xanthelj & [livejournal.com profile] flyingnorth are going to be cheering us on at various places around the course & then we'll all meet up at the end. Yay!

We're running in fluorescent yellow vests with our names on & the logos of our three charities (plus lots of paw prints! *g*) I'm also wearing my furry black Lab ears & tail that I modelled on Buddy, & I've pinned my cute John & Rodney 'Pegasus Heroes' badge that [livejournal.com profile] vida_boheme made onto my belt so that I have all of my boys with me! *g*

Thank you so, so much to everyone who's supported us (& listened to my running-related rambling! *g*) - we really appreciate all your good wishes & encouragement.
*HUGS*

Just been for a sport massage.
OMFG - I know these things hurt (I've had them before) but this was beyond pain. My IT band was so tight, & there were a couple of spots in my calves that made me break out in a sweat.
The massuer was really nice though, & he said that I wasn't overly tight - considering I'm training for a marathon - except for the isssues with my calves & ITB. He also said that I was really brave & that lots of people make a huge fuss when he hits the sore spots. I just squeezed my eyes closed & winced. *g* I think training with a dodgy knee must have increased my pain threshold.

So - only 8 days to go!

Btw, I was listening to a Marathon Talk long run special, & they were interviewing a positive thinking coach (or whatever they're called - not too sure.) Anyway, she suggested that you imagine someone running with you & offering support if you're feeling low on a long, lonely run.
So - my two running mates are John & Ronon (naturally) & Rodney is at the finish line cheering me on. *g* Okay, I only need Carson & Lorne in a cloaked jumper, & I'm living out my own story but there you go. ;-)
